“We are not that nervous because we know that with Trump it is all about relationships,” said one veteran European diplomat who has been in DC since the Trump administration. “The logic of doing it at Heritage was not lost on us,” said Victoria Coates, a deputy national security advisor to former President Trump who is now a vice president at the think tank. The comments sent European diplomats into over-drive, eager to understand exactly what Trump meant. “If they are worried about how President Trump is going to react to them, they hold it in their hands to do something about it,” Coates said. But European diplomats are not only worried about NATO.

There are more heavily trafficked routes across the Baltimore Harbor than the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The Harbor Tunnel carries double the daily traffic of the Key Bridge and the Fort McHenry Tunnel much more than that. The six men who are missing were part of this tradition of working Baltimore: members of a construction crew, working overnight hours filling potholes on the bridge. One day in 1977, Mr. Metzger said, his father, a truck driver, was coming back home from his route and happened upon the bridge’s ribbon cutting. And the Key Bridge is gone.”

The Chevrolet Blazer’s turbulent rollout is the latest setback as GM seeks to establish itself as an EV player. Photo: jim lo scalzo/ShutterstockAs one of the nation’s first owners of General Motors ’ new electric Chevrolet Blazer, James Hattin was loving the SUV—before the problems began. On a trip from the mountains back to his home in Burbank, Calif., he and his wife heard weird clicking noises coming from the dashboard. A short time later, the cruise control went out. A few days after that, in his driveway, the car’s screens went blank and the car wouldn’t start.

House Speaker Mike Johnson could set a vote on formalizing impeachment proceedings against President Biden in the coming week. Photo: Jim Lo Scalzo/ShutterstockWASHINGTON—House Republican leaders are moving toward a vote on formalizing an impeachment probe into President Biden, aiming to bolster an investigation that some in the party are still wary of pushing forward too quickly. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) and committee chairmen made a case to rank-and-file lawmakers on Friday, with a vote possible as soon as this week. House Republicans have already spent months trying to tie Biden to his family members’ overseas business dealings and gather support for their claims—which he denies—that he benefited from them.

The 336-95 vote exceeded a two-thirds threshold required under a special procedure employed by Johnson to sidestep internal GOP disagreements. The measure still requires approval from the Democratic-controlled Senate, where the leaders of both parties have signaled support but timing was uncertain.

Fed Takes Heart in a Supply-Side Boom

Fed Chair Jerome Powell says wage increases are coming down as supply and demand are rebalanced in the labor market. Photo: jim lo scalzo/ShutterstockWhen spending and employment grow as quickly as they have lately, it normally means inflation pressure is building and the Federal Reserve might have to raise interest rates. But on Wednesday Fed Chair Jerome Powell suggested otherwise. Demand, he said, has indeed grown rapidly, but so has supply. A supply-side boom generates the best of all worlds: brisk growth and falling inflation.

Rep. Jim Jordan failed a second attempt at being elected speaker on Wednesday after 22 Republicans voted against him. It has been more than two weeks since the ouster of the previous speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy. Photo: Jim Lo Scalzo/ShutterstockWASHINGTON—Republican speaker nominee Rep. Jim Jordan was set to fall short in a third round of voting to secure the gavel Friday morning, after struggling to win support from colleagues who have opposed his candidacy, likely leaving Republicans at a fresh impasse. While the Ohio conservative has campaigned as a speaker who can unite the party, he continues to face long odds, a full week after securing the GOP nomination and more than two weeks after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) was ousted. Republicans have no current fallback plan after rejecting a proposal to vote on giving more powers to Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R., N.C.).

Rep. Jim Jordan failed a second attempt at being elected speaker after 22 Republicans voted against him. Photo: Jim Lo Scalzo/ShutterstockWASHINGTON—GOP Rep. Jim Jordan failed again to win enough votes to be elected House speaker, as divisions hardened for House Republicans, with some lawmakers pursuing new paths to break the impasse that has paralyzed the chamber. More than two weeks after former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) was ousted, Republicans remained gripped in a fierce internal struggle over his successor. Jordan said he would keep up his campaign, but pushed off any further voting until Thursday at the earliest as mounting GOP defections on his second ballot left Republicans snarled into warring factions over what should happen next.

Trinity Site is the national historic landmark that’s home to mankind’s first nuclear blast on July 16, 1945, where plutonium gamma rays lit up the night sky. A caution sign warns of radioactive materials at Trinity Site in New Mexico back in 2008. The open house event, hosted by the US Army, is free but limited to the first 5,000 guests, on a first-come, first-served basis. Trinity Site’s atmosphere during an open house is reminiscent of a small-town carnival from a bygone era. And on April 6, 2024, Trinity Site again opens for a single day.

Jim Lo Scalzo/Pool via REUTERS Acquire Licensing RightsSept 11 (Reuters) - The United States should think about eliminating corporate subsidies, including to energy companies, U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said in New York on Monday. Adeyemo defended President Joe Biden's budget proposal for fiscal 2024, noting that achieving fiscal sustainability would include modest tax increases, boosting tax revenue collections and finding other ways to cut costs. "None of us thinks it makes sense to subsidize energy companies in light of how they're doing in this country. But there are probably other subsidies and other things we can do to make the budget more efficient." Adeyemo said he hoped to engage with Republicans in the House of Representatives about the issue, without giving any further details.
